EPISODE NOTES 201 – “In Seldon’s Shadow”
Beginning with the refreshed title sequence, we swapped out about 30% of the images – these images speak to the changes that have affected our show in-between seasons and, in some cases, point towards where things are heading at the end of the season.
This episode (along with the entire season) was shot between October of 2021 and July of 2022. We shot in Ireland, Malta, Prague, and on 4 different islands in the Canaries – Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Gomera.
Loosely speaking, this season adapts and remixes Asimov’s short stories “The Traders”, “The Merchant Princes”, and “The General”.
The scenes inside the Prime Radiant were filmed on about 4 different smaller sets, many involving mirrors. A few of the sets rotated, with Jared Harris suspended on wires so that he could walk down and then up stairs, etc. We had to digitally erase reflections of the crew (and lots of fingerprints) in dozens of shots!
Those little holographic creatures that Hari’s father is studying are moonshrikes. Hari’s family are ranchers on Helicon and we’ll learn more about his backstory in 206.
Day’s naked fight was choreographed by Laurent Demianoff, who worked on John Wick: 4, among other projects. Lee practiced the choreography for at least 3 months.
Trantor’s artificial rings – some people have wondered whether or not Empire could have been capable of building those rings in 138 years. But I would argue that with self-assembling machines, this far in the future, constructed a mega-structure like that would be relatively easy. Certainly much easier than constructing a Dyson sphere, etc.
We shot Dorwin’s recorded message (along with Phara cameo) during Season 1, hoping we’d get a 2nd season.
