EPISODE NOTES 202 – “A Glimpse of Darkness”
The bridge of the Beggar’s Lament was on a gimbal that allowed the set to rock left and right and backwards and forwards. Our camera operators had to be tethered to the walls in order to keep them upright. I directed this and episode 203 and I spent far too many days on that topsy-turvy set. I’m prone to seasickness, so it was miserable!
For Gaal’s vision later on in the episode, we actually made it rain inside the set. (Rehearshing these scenes with Jared, Leah, and Lou.)
For the scenes with Constant riding Beki, we had a motorized “buck” that crew members had to push. For most of the scenes with Beki “acting”, we had a stunt person with a foam head.
We filmed the Siwenna scenes in the Jardin de Cactus on Lanzarote. These two camels couldn’t bear to be separated and would cry whenever they were apart. On our 2nd night, one of the camels stepped off the path and crushed an underground water main. The whole garden flooded and we had to delay filming for 2 hours while the leak was fixed.
I’ve long been a huge fan of Holt McCallany. We met a few years ago and stayed in touch. When the role of Jaegger came up, I emailed Holt and asked if he was game for an extended “cameo”. We played him as if he were one of the big, new leads – and then – boom!
Another one of our new cast members for season 2 was Ella-Rae Smith. Before being cast as Queen Sareth, Ella-Rae had previously auditioned for both Gaal and Brother Constant.
Rehearsing the end scene where Gaal reveals the end of her “vision”…
You couldn’t see them all that well in the cut, but we had glass busts of Lewis Pirenne, Sef Sermak, and Salvor in the Board Room of the Foundation…
